~Why Am I in College?~

This website is set up specifically to answer the question, "Why am I in College?"

When I first heard the question my response was: I never want to ask "do you want fries with that?" ever again. I assumed that my response to that question was standard.

I was shocked to find out that the answer to that question ranges from: "I am in college because I want to achieve my full potential" to "I just want to get laid."

Perhaps you are in college right now, perhaps you went to college years ago, maybe you are planning to go to college soon. You can add to this discussion by telling me:

"Why are YOU in college?"

I went to college so I could be more well rounded and also to get out of the house away from my parents. Funny now I spend more time eating with my parents now then I ever did and I even graduated college.

I am going to college for all the reasons I listed on your blog, but I missed the most important reason: Brain Atrophy. Use it or lose it. I was starting to feel really stupid until someone mentioned "Mommy Brain" and I realized I needed to do something. Plus, I want to get laid.

SO when your kids come to you and ask for help with homework, you don't feel like a dumbass cuz the stuff they learn now just in high school is way beyond me and what i was taught 16 years ago in high school. i mean really, at this stage, my 15 year old thinks i am so uncool and "old" as it is, why add to it??

I am in college because I felt my brain melting at home and was worried that the kids were getting smarter than me.

I went to college because it was expected of me. I really didn't have a choice.

Wasn't like I had anything else to do either.

My husband went to college so he could get a good job, ie make lots of money.

I went to college to "make something of myself." I graduated with honors from a four-year accounting program. I went on to get my CPA license. I worked in the accounting industry and after a series of career moves and promotions became a Business Manager and worked my ass off. For the money, for the sense of accomplishment, for the experience, for the chest pains.

Now I'm a bookkeeper and mother of four.

I'm going to college mainly to gain skills but also like Accidental Housekeeper said brain atrophy. Just sort of felt my brain power ebbing away. Oh yeah and to get laid.

One word of advice to all that said "to make lots of money" if you are not interested in anything specific just get a general degree like english or communications...don't go for "in demand" career you advisor recommends odds are they say that to every one and when you get the market will already be saturated (happened to 2 cousins of mine....spent thousands and thousands of dollars on 4 year degrees and ending up working in retail for 3 years after college)

My presence in college, is to make me a more complete person, the yearning to learn, and that certificate that may get my dream occupation.

I'm not in college now, but I returned to college to finish my degree (which I did) at age 42, with 4 kids, because I got tired of checking off "some college" on all the forms I had to fill out for my kids' schools at the beginning of each school year.

Found you via Suburban Bliss. I've gone back to school this year after 19 years b/c I want my kids to go to college and I think they are much more likely to if I have my degree. I love your writing style.
